221/365 Cool in the shade

At Darley Park there is a terrace with an amazing old wisteria growing over a large pergola. Jodie and I sat in one corner on a low wall eating our ice-creams in the cool shade and this was my 'view'. The terrace & cafe were busy, lots of people out with friends, family, dogs, reading the Sunday papers, relaxing, enjoying some proper summer weather for once - tomorrow's forecast is for showers :0} (Shame, as I'll be at a wedding...) (with my newly acquired 40D...)

220/365 Gate

I captured this beautiful gate at the rear of St Werburgh's Church on the way back to Bold Lane Car Park with Jodie this afternoon. The church hasn't been a church for many years but looking at this image, you wouldn't guess this was in Derby's city centre (downtown) right next to a concrete multi-storey car park! I was trying out my 40D :0)

218/365 Water

I captured this 'shower' right before it started to rain. The sun shone this morning and it seemed a fine warm day, so we filled the paddling pool; I set the hose going while I put washing out on the line to dry. Within half an hour it had begun to rain, just a little, so while Jodie played in the paddling pool I sat with an umbrella and camera nearby. As the rain started to get more insistant - I had hoped it was a passing shower, it seemed so pathetic - we decided to get the washing in and come indoors instead. The curse of the paddling pool... ? Uh-oh...

Also this morning, whilst the sun shone, the butterflies were all over the buddleia like a rash, and Sweetie hid in the winter flowering jasmine hoping to pounce on one.

217/365 Old family photographs

This afternoon was spent looking through old photographs of my family. I took the boxes of prints and negatives to Roland & Suzanne's - Suzanne had asked if I could look out any photos of Roland growing up. Our Dad was a keen photographer for many years and had a darkroom of his own.

Across the bottom you can see our elder brother Steve, our Mum, Steve again. Across the centre - Rol & Steve with Mum; cousins Cathryn & David, our Mum holding baby Steve on the top of the wall, and Aunty Honey (Ethel) and Uncle Alf (obscured); Aunty Honey holding a turkey (they were farmers). Top image is cousin Cathryn; top right Roland as a toddler and Steve (obscured) with 2 girls whom we think may be Uncle George's daughters, so cousins.

The oldest images were of our parents as babies/toddlers in the early 1930s. As is so often the case, only a few pictures had any info on the reverse, and some that had been in albums had been removed or fallen out and so were separated from their captions.
Our own children will have digital archives with not just dates but the times that images were captured - but still not necessarily names and places!

216/365 Wishful Thinking

Jodie added 'pony' and 'horse' to the shopping list today. I use a spreadsheet for my list (I know, I know!), it prompts me so its more reliable than me just trying to remember. Jodie helped fill it out by putting a tick next to things we needed and adding in a few things that are not already on the list. We don't need a pony or a horse, really we don't! Wishful thinking!

215/365 Spiral

The ornamental gardens at Elvaston Castle are full of shapes and patterns. I met up with several photo-club members there this evening for a walk, followed by a drink at the Harrington Arms nearby. The cloud was low and grey so lack of light was a problem - I'll just have to go back on a brighter day! :0)
